Music to my ears

Lately I have become obsessed with a song. And that doesn't happen too often. From the first time I heard it, though, The Killers' "Mr. Brightside" really makes my day. And there were three nights in a row last week that I heard it coming home from work. (Thanks, big, corporate radio stations with no variety to their playlists.) I even talked with Barry about how it is not often that I like a song on first listen — and keep on liking it. And so I am like millions of others out there who make the Billboard Top Ten exactly what it is.g

Round 5?

On Tuesday, I was carrying Sarah across Broad Street to the children's museum for playgym, and all I could think about was how heavy she has gotten seemingly overnight. Well, come Wednesday I was convinced the newly found weight was, in fact, the gallons and gallons of snot lodged in her head. Sickness, once again, has descended upon our house. Hopefully the girl will be on the upswing soon because right now we are dealing with THE CROUP. And thanks to Mary's Web site she on lehighbaby, I am more totally freaked out now. I shouldn't have access to that much information. And Barry, you, especially, should stay away. Despite viewing the parenting site, though, I must say I am much more calm in dealing with illness this go around. I can handle it!h

I am rioting...on the inside

Chattanooga can't and won't be distracted from the bevy of ribbon cutting ceremonies this weekend. I expect the streets to be flooded with lots of families, funnel cakes and Bush-style family values. I wonder if Chris Gaynor will be out & about with his family. John Eric Henderson will not.

The more time I spend in Chattanooga the more it seems like a set from a movie. There is this illusion of forward thinking. It is all very believeable...until I listen to local talk radio. Aside from the morning shows (who didn't seem to know who Chris Gaynor was), the local jocks have opened up the phone lines to get people to comment on this story. The good ol' boy network must have sent out the memo, "call the radio station again, we's fixin ta have some riots" I can here the rustle of the white hoods against the telephone receiver. "What was Henderson doin, grabbin fer a bottle of smell goods, rustle rustle - colored had it comin'"

So I'll be angry this weekend as I debate whether or not it is worth it to live in this bullshit hick-town.

New York, here we come

We finally picked a hotel room for NY. It feels so good to make it official. I feel like June is just around the corner. But in the meantime, Frou-Frou has decided to change her sleeping habits, so each day feels extra long. But here's a picture of her looking as cute as can be. It was taken before the weather dropped into the 50s over the weekend, but thank goodness it's rising again.

Dootzed Up

I am in recovery mode from this weekend's activities, most of which included alcohol consumption (which is a rare component to a typical Setlich weekend these days). As I age, the incompatibility between my body and beer seems more and more exaggerated. Not only am I always greeted with ruthless hangover symptoms, but my digestive system revolts making it impossible to blame smells on the Chattababy. I believe I tried such a stunt yesterday in the car:

Megan - Was that you?

Barry - (points toward Chattababy)

Chattababy - Wussaaahh?

Megan - I'm quite convinced she is not capable of old man beer farts.

Chattababy - Wussaaahh?

Barry - You, that was you Sarah.

Chattababy - Dootz

Megan - Yup, Daddy's on the juice.

Wee ones

It's crazy that I never have time to upload photos of Sarah at home, but the girl is obsessed with the computer mouse. And it's optical, so I'm afraid that red laser light is going to fry her eyeballs. And our desk is glass, and pointy, and just the perfect height to jab her temples when she loses her balance stretching for the mouse I am holding out of her reach. So here I am with this blast from the past picture. It's funny that Barry and I got nostalgic at the same time, because at lunch today he said he had looked at the photos his mom and dad took last year at our lunch outings. He said I would cry when I saw them — they are that cute. Well, because I was going through my work e-mail and deleting all the old, memory-hogging stuff, I had seen them that same day. What a difference! The dark hair, the way she fit, strectched out, width-way on the couch. I'm falling in love with baby her all over again. And it proves to me how important photos are — because it is so easy to forget all these moments as they simply blend together to create 14-month-old Sarah.
And speaking of aging, I am preparing to go to my 10 year high school reunion tomorrow. Although I am the biggest procrastinator, I got giddy tonight thinking about it and am now ACTUALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO GOING! I am in touch with hardly any of my classmates, so it will be neat to see what they do now. I've only imagined it all so far.

Since I don't get to hear This American Life anymore, I was delighted to find this story about host Ira Glass. It also reminds me I need to get back out the Sedaris CDs Jen and Kim gave us. They are wonderful, too, and I still have more to hear!

I can't help it anymore

I hate to follow Barry with my inevitable rant about gas prices (I'm surprised I waited this long. What else is a blog good for, anyway?) I'm not altering travel plans yet, but that hasn't stopped me from turning red while I watch the numbers race higher and higher while my tank fills up and I clean out my car. (Pumping gas is probably the only time I clean out my car.) I remember the good ol' days (Wow. I have those already?) The days of high school when gas was less than a dollar a gallon and I would quiz myself by trying to match a historical event with whatever price my tank stopped at. $10.66 — Battle of Hastings. $12.15 — Magna Carta was signed. On those days I would feel smart. And now? There's no more feeling smart. $25.56 — we colonize Jupiter? $29.42 — Computers take over the world?
