ABCs

She's growing up

I know it sounds too soon, but I think Sarah's two days of schools are already having a profound effect on her. Each day the school leaves a check sheet in the "Barry/Megan" mailbox so we can see what Sarah learned that day. Both days the line that said "was a good classroom helper" was checked. And do you know what? On Friday, Sarah started cleaning up toys with no prompting! She even stood up and moved around to clean up more toys (She usually just goes for the ones within reach.) I am amazed.

School is more wonderful than I could have imagined, and Sarah says she's ready to go back Tuesday. Thursday morning was a bit rough, however, with crying from the moment she got up to after I ran out the school door. But Sarah's teacher is perfect, and after trying to distract Sarah with a toy, she just scooped her up and carried her away, telling Sarah about all the fun they were going to have! When I arrived in the afternoon, Sarah was in line to wash her hands. I was all "Ooh, let mommy help you," and she said, "No, lets go home and wash hands." She was so ready to get out of there.

But week one is down, and the good far outweighs the bad. I am so proud of her.

She did it!

Sarah went to school yesterday and said she had a great time. I was even spared the tears yesterday morning, because the teacher said they happened after I dashed out of there. I said goodbye, gave her a hug and actually ran to my car to get out of view. But, teacher said Sarah was sad at first but warmed up to her new friends very well as the day wore on. I came to pick Sarah up at 1:00, and I peeked around a corner to see her sitting on the floor playing with a tiger and giraffe with a little girl. When Sarah saw me, though, she ran to me, tears streaming down her face, and clung to me, sobbing and shaking. The whole way home she kept saying, "Mommy come to get me." Like she thought I was gonna leave her there? Well, she said she wanted to go back on Thursday, which is the best part for me. Sarah's highlights she told me about on the way home:
1. She had a sticker on her hand (She said teacher gave it to her to make her feel better)
2. She sat on a big pillow.

No school yet

Well, the long-awaited first day of school did not happen today. The reason?

... It all started Thursday, when Sarah and I took a trip down to Georgia to visit my high school friend. I figured this was my last chance to get down there, with Sarah starting school and all. We had such a blast!! I don't know why I'm not down there every week. We haven't seen each other in over a year, but like Abby said, it feels like days. Well, I got to meet Abby's darling little one-year-old for the first time, who is such a sweetheart. We ate lunch, tried to go to a park (It actually started pouring the moment we pulled into the parking lot), went to the mall — all without naps for the little girls. Needless to say, as we started to hit 3 o'clock, Sarah started to lose her cool.

So, we left around six to head home, took a pit stop at Burger King and were halfway home when Sarah started asking for Bun-bun (purple rabbit, love of her life.) I pulled over to look for him ... and look ... and look. HE WASN"T IN THE CAR. I called Abby, and thankfully he was there and not at Burger King. For the next hour, Sarah would ask where Bun-bun was, which would make me cry, and then, crying, Sarah would say, "Don't cry, mama." She cried most of the way home. And most of the night. We even let her sleep with us — a first.

By morning Sarah was whimpering and saying, "Look in my mouth." I thought she just cried herself hoarse, but Barry knew she was sick. I called the nurse, who wanted me to bring her in, so Sarah got to take a strep test — WHICH WAS POSITIVE. My poor little girl had strep throat and no Bun-bun.

And so, in the noblest of gestures, of which I will remind Sarah for the rest of her life, her daddy drove for four hours to retrieve her purple rabbit so the two would not have to be apart for another night.

Antibiotics are wonderful things, so Sarah is down to just a nasty cough and a mildly running nose — which are both keeping her out of school. Hopefully she will be better by Thursday, because at this point I just want to get that first day over with.
